What to do when tapping isn’t working: 3 common problems and solutions.

why isn't this working?

Whilst I adore EFT tapping and I know it works spectacularly, I sometimes hear people say that they’ve tried the EFT tapping before and it just hasn’t worked for them. I can see that they’ve pretty much dismissed it and don’t really feel it would be useful for them.

This is a real shame and often, when I ask for details of their experience with tapping there are some common themes that come up that indicate to me where they could improve their tapping approach. If we then work together we’ve been able to successfully iron the kinks out of their tapping so they CAN get the full benefit of it and they start getting the results they want.

So, I want to share my insights about the three most common tapping ‘problems’ and ‘solutions’ that I come across, in the hope that this will revitalise and deepen your experience of tapping if you are someone who has found it to be less effective than you’d hoped.

1. Being too vague

Problem

Not being specific enough in your focus  e.g. tapping on ‘feeling angry’.

Solution

Become more focused and specific e.g. tap on ‘feeling boiling mad and tense in my chest about what he said to me’. Also, look back for that pattern in your past (who made you angry, how often you are angry etc) and tap out old memories with that same theme. If you are consistent and work back through past events and triggers you will clear the pattern completely.

2. Leaving out vital aspects

Problem

By only looking at part of the picture you can still be re-triggered by other aspects of it. For example, if you are tapping for a fear of spiders, maybe you’ve tapped about how you hate spiders and their scary hairy legs. Yet, maybe you haven’t yet tapped for other aspects of your fear of spiders e.g. how they make you jump when they move suddenly into view or drop down from a web.

Solution

Write down all the ‘aspects’ of the issue that you can think of and systematically tap through them all, one by one, making sure there is no negative feeling left on any of them. Again, tapping through past related memories will support this (if your memories are traumatic or intense, please consider working with a qualified and experienced practitioner, such as myself rather than tackling traumatic memories alone).

3. Stopping tapping too soon or changing issues.

Problem

Say you are tapping on a feeling of sadness that started at an intensity of 8 out of 10, you may feel so much relief once your intensity is down to a 4 that you stop tapping. Yet, there is still some intensity remaining that needs to be cleared. You may even switch to another issue at that point. If you tap on several issues that way, none of them are fully cleared.

Solution

Make sure to get the intensity down to zero for each issue. Make sure to test each issue by trying to ‘bring back’ the negative feeling. Once you have completely tapped it out and can’t ‘bring it back’, then do some positive tapping to raise your mood. So, if you were tapping for feelings of sadness, you could choose to tap on feeling happy once you’d cleared the sadness completely. Then you’ve really turned your energy around in the moment and transformed your mood.

Now, here’s this weeks video.

Of course, you can actually use tapping to help you make your tapping more effective and to release any resistance to it e.g. to release feelings of frustration or disappointment that it isn’t working, as I demonstrate in this weeks tapping video. What do you think?

I truly hope this has helped you if you felt your tapping just wasn’t giving you the results you want.

  1. Hey Ferris– great video! Whenever I find that my tapping “isn’t working”, it’s almost always because I’m being too vague. As soon as I zero in on my issue (and my feelings about it), tapping works wonders. 🙂

    • Great recognition Dana :-)When we really focus and zero in on those feelings, that’s where the magic happens, just like you found out for yourself. Thanks for sharing that with me.

  2. Thanks for the info. Tapping has worked for me, but I do switch topics too often, instead of really getting to the bottom of one issue. This will help a lot. Thanks again.

    • Great to hear that Mike. You can always make a note of the different issues that come up and rate their intensity, then choose one to work through thoroughly. After sorting one issue check back on the others and you may find that their intensity has also dropped, so they’ll require less tapping. Let me know how you get on and thanks for your comment.
