How to turn around a crappy morning (or a crappy day).

How to turn around a crappy morning (or a crappy day).

You know those days when you just don’t want to get out of bed or face the day ahead?
We all have mornings like that. Unfortunately, if we dread the day ahead, we’re usually unconsciously setting ourselves up for a rough ride.
Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way. We can turn it around.  Here’s how.

Nip it in the bud.

The quicker that you can recognise that your mood and outlook are low, the better. That acknowledgement and conscious awareness is the first step to turning it around. The earlier you catch yourself, the easier it is to change your mood.
So, if you can recognise it before even getting out of bed, you’ve the best chance for turning it around before your feet hit the floor (like I demonstrate in this week’s tapping video).

I love the Abraham-Hicks analogy for this. They get us to imagine a car at the top of a hill. If we take the handbrake off, it will roll down the hill. If we’re standing in front of it, we can stop it with ease, just by putting our arms out. Yet, if it’s rolled half way down a steep hill, it isn’t going to stop so easily (and it would be unwise to try to stand in front of it to try to stop it).
So, be aware and catch it first thing if you can, by checking in when you start to wake up and asking yourself how you’re doing. If it’s anything less than great, take action to turn it around, such as a round of EFT tapping or a simple meditation or breathing exercise like the one below).

Breathing exercise: Take a deep breath in, filling your lungs and belly. As you inhale, imagine breathing in fresh energy and vitality. As you exhale, imagine breathing out your worries or concerns, letting them go as the breath exits your lungs and mouth.
Repeat for several minutes or until you start to feel refreshed and re-vitalised.

Pre-pave your day.

Usually, if you’re feeling crappy in the morning, it’s because you went to bed worrying about something or already feeling low. If that’s the case, then I suggest re-focusing your mind on how you would like the next day or the day ahead to be, rather than dwelling on what may not go well or what isn’t working in your life.
N.B. If there’s a ‘big’ issue that’s bugging you, I suggest carving out some time to address it head on, EFT tapping is a quick way to release any intensity around those ‘big’ issues so you can free up your energy and use it more positively.

In this week’s video I explain what pre-paving is and how it can help you go from ‘blah’ to being excited about the day ahead and able to enjoy it no matter what. I also share how to pre-pave using EFT tapping. Click here or on the image below to watch and tap along.

But, what if you don’t catch it early? What is you’re slap bang in the middle of an ‘awful day’? What then?
Here are a few more tips.

Take a break.

If you feel like you are in a mental quagmire and / or overwhelmed by the happenings of the day, try to take a break. Think of something else entirely, preferably something fun or uplifting, even just for a few minutes.

Distract yourself as much as you can, if you can physically get a change of scene e.g. take a walk, that really helps. If not, at least try to move your body (maybe a little dance break) or sit and meditate to change your frame of mind ( even 5 minutes doing the breathing exercise I shared earlier can be of benefit).

Get a sense of perspective.

Whatever is bothering you, it can seem like a huge deal in the moment, but will it be a huge issue for you in 5 or 10 years time? Probably not.
It can help to put your day in perspective, to know that tomorrow is a new day and that what seems overwhelming today probably won’t matter much even a few weeks or months later.
Think back to something that bothered you 6 months ago, chances are that it’s resolved by now.
With that in mind, look at all the energy you’re focusing on what’s up for you right now. Maybe, you could instead start to trust that it WILL all work out in the end.

Choose differently.

As I like to say (and you may may have heard me say it before in the blog) the bottom line is that you get to choose how you react or respond to your circumstances. Even if it IS a ‘crappy’ day, you’re the one who gets to choose whether to let that get you down or not.
It is possible to choose to be optimistic, to choose to be happy anyway, even when things don’t seem to be going your way. Are you wiling to try that?

You can start by thinking of things that are going well in your life, things that you are grateful for. You can’t be happy and sad at the same time, so if you gravitate to happy thoughts, memories or experiences (even imagined ones) you just can’t stay feeling bad.

You can also repeat the pre-paving tapping throughout the day, focusing on the remainder of the day or any specific event that you are bothered about, so you can change the energy around it.

Over to you.

What are your top tips for turning around a crappy morning? Do tell.
Leave your comments in the comment section below and if you tried the tapping, let me know how you found it.

Thank you.

As ever, please feel free to pass this article along to those you know who can benefit from it, so more people can be inspired to have a happy day instead of a crappy one.

P.S. If you wake up feeling ok in the morning but you’d like to feel great, then I suggest doing some Positive EFT to get you feeling fabulous. Check out my free Positive EFT video series for some great tap-along videos you can use to set your day up to be amazing.

  1. Oh, Ferris, thank you so much for this wonderful video. I LOVE tapping because it’s incredibly powerful but I haven’t practiced it as often as I would like to. Your video was just the inspiration I needed! 🙂 What I do to turn around a crappy morning, is jump on my mini bouncer. It only takes a minute or so and things start to look brighter again :-).

    • I’m so glad this is inspiring you to get tapping again and I love your idea of using your mini re-bounder to brighten p your day, that’s a great idea Nathalie, thanks for sharing it.

  2. Amazing how the universe brings you messages when you need them the most. After a crappy morning filled with stress and crappy news, I decided that I had enough bad news and was deserving of a couple of miracles to balance out the crappy morning. And of course, the universe said “OK” and I got the wonderful news Ive been waiting for a few weeks.

So I chose differently, as you said above. Thanks for the wonderful reminder!

  3. Wonderful video! I never thought to use this kind of phrasing for tapping (vs the “I completely accept myself” version) I like it and am in a good mood now 🙂

    • It’s lovely to know that the tapped helped your mood and that you like this style of tapping. I love it, thanks for letting me know Erin.

  4. love love love this, ferris. i’ve had an especially difficult month of april so far (not fair since this is MY month!), and i’ve tried to retain my peace of mind by doing my daily qi gong practice and taking lots of deep breaths. (i really like the breathing exercise you shared in this post!) and yes, i’m a big proponent of CHOICE. we “get to choose how to react or respond to our circumstances.” i’m forever telling my clients this – trying to remember it myself right now. (thanks.)

  5. Oh Ferris, I could have used this last week. Sure, I have my tools for shifting the energy when things are rough or just blah, like breathing or a dance break. I could have used that reminder to stop that car before it got too far down the hill. This is a great reminder for next time!

    • I’m glad you liked the car analogy Cathy. I find it helps me to notice when my mood gets ‘off’ before it’s ‘half way down the hill’ 🙂
It really helps me to be mindful. So glad it can help you too Cathy.

  6. I’m so glad this post was helpful for you April. Sometimes it helps to be reminded of what we ‘know’ and help others with. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget to follow our own advice until another reminds us of it 🙂
