3 no-nos if you’re feeling run down.

Feeling run down?
So, you’re feeling a bit tired or run down, yes? It happens to us all, even me.

Yes, I was feeling a little tired and run down this morning. Having realized this, I reached for my best energy and mindset techniques to help me out of it, but not before I’d nearly sabotaged myself with these no-nos. That got me thinking about all the friends and clients that I’ve seen do the same over the years. I’ve listed the no-nos here, so you don’t fall prey to them yourself.

No-no 1. Ignore it.

Have you ever wanted to just push on, thinking that it’ll sort itself out or telling yourself that you just have to keep going? That’s a dangerous strategy, a bit like having the engine check light come on in your car and ingoring it. Would you say ‘I’ll just get to that next week’ about an engine check light? You may have a busy schedule and things you ‘have’ to do, but be careful of forever pushing on and ignoring your physical, mental or emotional fatigue.

Usually, our body is trying to tell us something when we feel tired or run down. It pays to take a moment to listen to it, otherwise it will just find louder and louder ways to tell you, ways that you can’t ignore quite so easily.

I’m not saying to dwell on it, but get curious. If you connect with your body and ask it questions, you can get a lot of useful information about what is going on (I show you a simple exercise to do that later on).

No-no 2. Beat yourself up about it.

It can be easy to go into self judgement when we feel unwell or tired. How many times have you asked yourself ‘what did I do wrong?’ when that happens. That kind of questioning just makes you feel bad and isn’t likely to inspire you to feel better.
I’d go so far as to say that giving yourself a hard time about it is just about the worst thing you can do, so if you have a tendancy to do that and you easily go into self blame or wonder what you’ve been doing wrong, watch this video.

No-no 3. Forget the power of your mind and energy.

Have you ever done this? It makes me laugh when I do this or see my friends, who know the power of energy and mindset work somehow forget all their best techniques when they themselves feel ‘off’. It seems to be a part of our human nature, but one we can overcome.
I have literally got people to write down the techniques that work best for them and pin it to their fridge or mirror where they will see it and allow it to jog their memories. Then it’s easier for them to start to take action to bring themselves back to full health.

So what DO you do to re-vitalize if you feel run down?

These are my top 3 recommendations for rejuvenating your energies and mood if you’ve been lacking in energy and have been feeling run down.

Yes-yes 1. Balance and harmonise your own energy

A good start here is the daily energy routine, from Energy Medicine Pioneer, Donna Eden, that I use daily and recommend to all my clients. It takes less than 10 minutes and when done regularly, really helps balance and strengthen our energy levels. If you’re feeling run down, try it twice a day. It just so happens that Donna has recently brought out a new video demonstrating the routine. You can watch it here and try it out for yourself.

Yes-yes 2. Self love and self care

When you’re run down, it’s time to be really, really kind to yourself, to nurture yourself back to full health. For self care I use two steps, tuning in and then taking self care action.
To gently tune in to your body start by taking several deep breaths, imagine connecting with your heart space and then gently ask your body to tell you what it requires to help it feel better. It’s that simple. Allow an answer to come and if it does e.g. if you get a sense that you need to rest, or walk more or practice relaxation techniques then do that. Click here for a demonstration of tuning in (and some self care tapping). Click here for an example of a self love meditation, all about bringing love to your cells (it’s a great pick me up).

Yes-yes 3. EFT tapping

This is my go-to technique most of the time because it’s such a quick and easy way to free up your energy. In this week’s video I demonstrate a round of EFT tapping that you can use if you are feeling tired or run down. Click here or on the image below to watch the video and join in with me. Even if you’ve never tried it before, you’ll be able to tap along with me, it’s that easy.

Final thoughts.

Tending to your own self care is, in my mind, the first step to turning around your energy and mood and I hope this post has given you some ideas to get started with that. If you are continually feeling tired and run down, it’s worth getting a medical check up and also considering getting extra support e.g. holistic / energy therapies to give you an extra boost so you can more easily get back on track.
Often mental and emotional stressors can leave us feeling tired and run down, so if you are dealing with a lot of stress, look at ways to deal with that and reduce it’s impact (EFT tapping can be highly effective for this). If you’d like my personal support with this, why not book a foundation session with me?

  1. What a great post, Ferris! I’ve been guilty of every no-no and even every yes-yes and I couldn’t agree more. I found your method for tuning in especially helpful and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing so many tools, tips and techniques in this post!

    • Thanks April, great that you liked the tips. We can all fall into the no-no traps, but also great that you practice the yes-yes tips. Also, I’m delighted that you found my tuning in method to be helpful.

  2. wonderful tips, ferris. thank you! in the past, i was often guilty of ignoring my tiredness – not listening to what my body was desperately trying to tell me. but in recent years, i’ve devoted more time to self-care, even if it’s meant just taking a few moments to do as you’ve suggested (b-r-e-a-t-h-e).

  3. If I start to feel run down I am much better these days about recognizing the need to slow down. I will ask myself if everything on my schedule is really all that important and urgent and try to cut back for a week and reset a little bit. My favorite self care is to take a nice bath 🙂 Great tips!

    • Hi Erin, it’s so good that you change your schedule where possible when you need to slow down, well done. A nice warm bath is high on my self care favourites too. Thanks for commenting.

  4. I’ve been feeling quite ill and run down this past week. I always wonder what this is a result of….i.e. is it because I don’t practice good self-care like I should? What have I been neglectful of? Is it stress? I loved the EFT tip. I know a few friends that do this and I think there’s a lot of power in this.

    • It’s tough when we feel ill not to wonder why Shae, yet when you spend that energy instead asking what would help us feel better, then we’re on the fast track to feeling great again. I’m glad you enjoyed the EFT, I love how simple and powerful it is.

  5. Learned something new today! I’ve tried EFT and I work a lot with herbal remedies to help increase energy and reduce stress but the 4 Thumbs is a great new addition and a simple exercise that looks like it could make a big difference. Will start trying it right now. Thanks!

    • That Donna Eden energy routine has some great little exercises in it. I trust you’ll feel the benefit for yourself and that you’ll be pleased that you added it to your range of tools for boosting your energy levels Jovanka.
